GOOD NEIGHBORS INTERNATIONAL VIETNAM

1. Vietnam Head Office

Good Neighbors Vietnam was established in 2005 in the villages of Jamo, Lo Son, and Do Nhan, about 60 miles away from the capital, Hanoi. Because of the lack of systematic education programs in the region, children’s education isn’t a priority and most don’t attend school. Good Neighbors has been working hard to engage families in sending their kids to school by supporting a scholarship program and providing school supplies, lunch meals, and art and physical education classes for students. Good Neighbors also operates a youth center for underprivileged adolescents. For families that are struggling with farming, Good Neighbors lends livestock and hosts workshops on farming techniques to help them generate a higher income. Good Neighbors also works to create a healthy, sanitary living environment for all community members by installing clean water wells and toilets for local residents.

2. Gia Mo Community Development Project

Gia Mo is located southwest of Hanoi and about 97% of the people in the community live on less than $1/day. The average monthly income is about $25. Since February 2005, Good Neighbors has been running a number of community development projects focused on reducing child malnutrition among children ages 2-5 in the region. By paying for tuition and providing school supplies, lunchtime meals, and hosting reading contests and scholarship programs, children in the area are able to receive a quality education. Good Neighbors also provides medical check-ups, sanitation workshops, clean water systems, and toilets so community members can live in a healthy, sanitary environment. To help increase the income of local families, Good Neighbors hosts workshops on farming techniques and lends livestock and seeds to help with costs.

3. Lo Son Community Development Project

Good Neighbors started a community development project in Lo Son in 2005 to focus on improving children’s education in the region by supporting scholarships for students and providing school supplies and lunchtime meals and hosting reading contests. To improve the community’s overall health and sanitation, Good Neighbors provides free medical check-ups, health classes, clean drinking water, and new toilets. Good Neighbors also supports farming families by hosting workshops on farming techniques and lending livestock and seeds to help decrease costs.

4. Hanoi Cultural Education Project

At Hanoi Cultural University, Good Neighbors has been offering Korean language classes to students since January 2006. The 20-month courses—four semesters and two different levels—are an effort to promote the Korean culture and language among Vietnamese students. Good Neighbors currently offers the classes to 60 students.

5. Do Nhan Community Development Project

In Do Nhan, 98% of people in the community live on less than $1/day and the average monthly income is about $25. Since 2008, Good Neighbors has started community development projects focused on education. The projects include providing school supplies and school meals, and hosting reading contests and scholarship programs for local children. Good Neighbors also provides medical check-ups, workshops on health and sanitation, clean water systems, and new toilets for the entire community. To help residents increase their income, Good Neighbors hosts classes on farming techniques and lends livestock and seeds to families.

6. Thinh Lang Community Development Project

Thinh Lang is located two hours away from Hanoi and Good Neighbors has been operating after-school programs, free lunchtime meals, and group activities on computer lessons, sports, art, and more for 420 children in the region since 2009. For the community, Good Neighbors also operates libraries, hosts movie nights, holds health education seminars, and provides medical check-ups, clean drinking water, and new toilets.

7. Mai Chau (Pieng be & Xam Khoe) Community Development Project

Good Neighbors recently added two new community development projects in Mai Chau and Peing be in 2010. To improve the health and education of children in the region, Good Neighbors provides school supplies, uniforms, medical check-ups and lunchtime meals for them, and also operates a library. For the community, Good Neighbors installs new toilets and builds clean drinking water facilities.
